The story begins in Rwanda where teenager Fabrice longs to pursue his ambition of becoming an association football legend. When he is offered the chance to audition for the opening ceremony of the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa, he sets off for Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, with his ‘manager’ Dudu and Dudu’s sister Beatrice. However, when they take the wrong bus and end up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, they decide to make the 3000 mile journey to Johannesburg, where the World Cup opening ceremony is taking place. On the journey, they enlist the help of an ex-child soldier named Foreman George, and Celeste, an escaped sex slave, and encounter a number of hurdles in Rwanda, Congo, Burundi, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and, finally, South Africa, including wild animals, a gang of feral children, disease and the challenge of crossing borders. Beatrice ends up enlisting in a free school, Fabrice pursues his dream and Dudu becomes a victim of HIV.
